German chocolate cake

German chocolate cake is a common holiday dessert. It is normally a 2-3 layered style semi-chocolately cake, topped with a coconut-pecan icing or frosting. German chocolate cake is fairly easy to make. I normally make this cake as I would any other cake. Simply heat oven to the appropriate temp, dump in the ingredients (as listed), mix, bake for 35-40 mins, let cool, and then ice it - !enjoy
Ingredients: Butter for greasing pans (I used 2 baking pans) - 3 1/2 of baker's chocolate or cocoa powder - 1/2 cup water - 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour or 2 1/2 cups cake flour - 1 teaspoon baking soda - 1 teaspoon salt - 2 cups granulated sugar - 1 cup butter unsalted (2 sticks), room temperature - 3 large eggs - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (any brand will do) - 1 cup buttermilk
Coconut-pecan icing/frosting: 3 large eggs - 1 cup granulated sugar or packed brown sugar - 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) - 1 cup evaporated milk (12-oz can) - 2 teaspoon vanilla extract - 1 1/2 cup flaked coconut - 1 1/2 cup chopped pecans
